These are the words of Confucius, an ancient Chinese philosopher, who believed a great deal in being respectful of your elders. These words went on to have a great effect on Chinese society and how they thought of hair. Keeping your hair long was important, because it showed proper respect to your parents.
In 1644, a new dynasty took over China. Under the new Qing dynasty it was a requirement for all men to wear their hair in a hairstyle known as a ‘queue’, shaved at the front and braided into a long ponytail at the back. The penalty for not having a hairstyle like this was death, and it was a law designed to keep people in their place.
So, especially from 1644, the combination of respect for your parents and the death penalty meant that long hair on men was a must in China. A sure sign of being a rebel was to cut your hair short, and while times have certainly moved on, the association of cutting your hair with rebellion still exists.
