“The body, hair and skin, all have been received from the parents, and so one doesn’t dare damage them.”

These are the words of Confucius, an ancient Chinese philosopher, who believed a great deal in being respectful of your elders. These words went on to have a great effect on Chinese society and how they thought of hair. Keeping your hair long was important, because it showed proper respect to your parents.

In 1644, a new dynasty took over China. Under the new Qing dynasty it was a requirement for all men to wear their hair in a hairstyle known as a ‘queue’, shaved at the front and braided into a long ponytail at the back. The penalty for not having a hairstyle like this was death, and it was a law designed to keep people in their place.

So, especially from 1644, the combination of respect for your parents and the death penalty meant that long hair on men was a must in China. A sure sign of being a rebel was to cut your hair short, and while times have certainly moved on, the association of cutting your hair with rebellion still exists.

You can see that hair was very important in China, and it was especially important in showing your freedom. We believe that all people should be able to wear their hair however they like, and that includes using a hair replacement system to recreate a natural hairstyle. That’s why we’re dedicated to giving you the full head of hair that you deserve.
